Ferrari makes India debut, prices start from Rs. 2.2 cr

Italian luxury sports car Ferrari on Thursday officially entered the Indian market with popular models such as the California, 458 Italia, 599GTB Fiorano and the latest FF at prices starting from Rs. 2.2 crore onward.

"Till yesterday, Ferrari was present in 57 countries. Now we are in the 58th country, which is India. We should have been in India much before and we expect to sell more than 100 cars in the next 2-3 years," Ferrari SpA Chief Executive Officer Amedeo Felisa said.

The company has appointed the Shreyans Group as its official importer in India. Bookings for the cars start today with the opening of the first dealership in the national capital. The second showroom is scheduled to open in Mumbai in the second half of 2011.

The Ferrari range which will be sold in India includes the Ferrari California priced at Rs. 2.2 crore, 458 Italia at Rs. 2.56 crore and 599GTB Fiorano tagged at Rs. 3.37 crore. All prices are ex-showroom in Delhi.

Ferrari's latest model the FF, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, will also be available. It carries a price tag of Rs. 3.41 crore.

Explaining the late arrival of Ferrari in India, Felisa said it was waiting for the right time to enter the market.

"We are in India for the long run and we wanted to be here at the right time after testing the market," he said. In 2008, Ferrari had conducted a 'Magic India Discovery Drive' in India, covering more than 13,000 kilometres and touching 57 cities over 74 days as part of a market testing exercise.

Felisa said globally, Ferrari sold 6,500 cars in 2010 and this year, the company expects to do much better.

"This year, we expect to beat our best ever sales of 6,700 units achieved in 2007," he said. The US is Ferrari's biggest market, accounting for about 30 per cent of sales, followed by Germany, while Japan is the biggest in Asia.

He said the Great China region, comprising China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, also has great potential and could become the company's second-largest market. The company sold about 600 units in the region last year.

According to Katrina, she started bike riding in Mumbai before she left for shooting in Spain. According to her this was the demand of character and now she can easily handle the heavy Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 500 without any hard effort. Katrina also added that riding the lighter bike in the beginning helps to learn the proper balancing of bike and once she got familiar in handling the lighter bike she shifted towards the heavy bike during the shooting schedule.

While talking regarding the difficulties she faced while riding the Enfield Bullet she replied that she is quite strong to overcome such challenges but she agreed that there were chances when she had to struggle in controlling the bike in the beginning of her learning process and quite often got her knees wounded on several occasions.

However by the time shooting schedule was over Katrina had mastered herself in bike riding. According to Katrina she often went for bike riding after the shoot was over and riding the bike on the roads of Barcelona was nice experience due to less traffic and good roads.

Katrina also added the whenever in coming future if she buys a bike she will definitely ride the bike according to the traffic rules and will wear helmet while riding and follow the traffic rules strictly.

iPhone 5 Rumored to Have a Curved Glass Screen

Whispers from Taiwan suggest that a curved glass touchscreen will be gracing the fifth-generation iPhone from Apple, dubbed the iPhone 5.

Technology news site DigiTimes reported today that sources in Apple’s supply chain have been talking about a major purchase of glass-cutting machines recently made by Apple. Apple has reportedly purchased up to 300 of the machines, which are used by glass manufacturers to create curved glass which can then be used for the iPhone’s display. Apple was purchasing the machines because glass makers are reportedly “reluctant to commit such an investment” in this equipment due to the high cost involved.

According to the DigiTimes report, “The glass slicing machines are currently being stored at associated assembly plants and will be brought online once yield rates for the production of curved glass reaches a satisfactory level.”

Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone has been rumored to be launching later than the iPhone’s usual early summer launch window, reportedly as late as September. As the launch is still months away, suppliers still have limited knowledge of the timeframe required for volume production. It has been widely reported that Apple is still working on items such as the phone’s camera sensor and lamination, and now the possibility of a curved glass display.

The next iPhone would not be the first major smartphone to launch with a curved display. Google’s Nexus S handset, which is produced by Samsung, launched with a curved glass display and the new “Gingerbread” operating system last December. By most reports, the “contour display” has been well-received by owners of the handset.

Other recent iPhone-related rumors suggest that the rear-facing camera lens and flash are being separated to opposite sides of the device. The goal for this is to reduce “red eye” and other artifacts caused by having the flash so close to the lens. Apple may also be looking to increase the size of the display, possibly to around 4 inches, by extending it nearly to the edges of the device. The resolution of the display – known as a “retina display” – would remain the same. Of course, none of these rumors, or today’s reports of the new curved glass display, are confirmed by Apple.
